FORREST GUMP AND THE BIBLE
If you haven’t seen the Academy Award winning film “Forrest Gump”……SHAME ON YOU! If you’re 30 years of age or younger, you may not have even heard of the film. Just Google it. If you haven’t heard of Google……I can’t help you! Lol. Forrest Gump was this fictional character that seemed to pop up right in the middle of our nation’s most iconic moments in history: Vietnam, Woodstock, Watergate, and there was Forrest in the middle of it all. Philip Mauro was the Forrest Gump of his day. He was an attorney, theologian, and author that seemed to pop up in all of the biggest moments in history. He was aboard the USS Carpathia that picked up survivors from the sinking Titanic [Leonardo DiCaprio was not one of them]. He wrote the legal briefs for the Scopes Monkey Trial which forever changed our nation. He also shared the gospel with someone you may have heard of…….Thomas Edison!! Mauro penned a series of books entitled “Fundamentals”. One of the volumes contained a chapter in which he describes the Bible. Here is my favorite excerpt:
“It has perennial freshness
It is non-obsolete and always contemporary
It is indestructible
It is a discerner of hearts and minds
It is remarkably translatable
It lodges in hearts and grows
It transforms other life”
The author of the Book of Hebrews would say it a bit differently but just as powerfully:
“For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.”
Hebrews 4:12
